Week 7

The top row represents an Anti-Bias Education, where every child learns to love one another and their differences. The bottom row represents what children go through and how they feel when bias and discrimination enter their lives. With each experience, a child is either given the opportunity to grow and experience new things, or left behind and not being able to see the world for what it is.

The bottom left picture is my favorite because it shows how children can get trapped by the labels that are given to them.

  1. I applaud your efforts of creating a collage of pictures that represent every aspect of human life. I especially like the cartoon entitled "Don't Label Me." There are times when we have a tendency to label people based on their disability or their need to belong to a particular group. It is hard for adults to feel accepted but we most definitely have to be sensitive to how we label children.

  2. Excellent collage. I like you, really like the picture in the bottom corner. It is so easy to get caught up in the labels that are everywhere. Children have no idea all the messages they are being sent. Lets be real, most adults do not either. But as educators we get to be one step ahead of the labels and get to widen prospective. Loved your post!

  3. Wonderful post! I agree that labels can influence stereotypes. Sometimes people are quick to label others. However, I know that sometimes labeling can ensure resources (such as in disabilities and special education services). Unfortunately, with labeling often comes stereotypes and biases. Great post!

  4. I think the most effective picture is the one of the child sitting alone, crouched down. I felt his pain. I think many people can feel the pain of the child. I liked the way your organized the pictures.
